Norfolk Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Where should I relocate a trapped opossum

An opossum is an animal that is only slightly larger than a cat or a small dog/puppy. Catching an opossum is usually not that difficult because all you need is a cage trap with a bait. Since opossums eat almost everything, you do not even need special baits to lure them in. However, the most difficult aspect of catching an opossum is its release. Often at times, people feel very overwhelmed when they could not find a suitable place for its release. After all, killing an innocent animal to get rid of it is not the solution at all.

It has been a standard practice for people to trap and relocate an opossum far away from their property in a suitable location. However, this is true for those who do know about a good place to release it. This is because most of the times, relocating an opossum simply means that you are relocating the problem by not reducing it. This is because no matter wherever opossums go they are likely to multiply in number again quite fast until their population has to get control again. Apart from that, relocation of the opossum, it is also suggested that you are simply creating room for more opossum’s to thrive in your area. So technically speaking, you are only temporarily solving a problem and there is no permanent solution for it.

Usually, the best way is to trap an opossum and to release it in a public wildlife park so that it may find a better home to live in. This is because in case you relocate the opossum in an area that is not a wildlife park, the opossum is likely to get attacked by other animals or opossum’s that are thriving in that particular area. This is primarily because opossums happen to be territorial animals. This results in a lot of stress in the animal, and usually, they end up getting killed as a result of it. Hence, relocation in an area that is already full of opossum’s or other animals is quite inhumane for the animal.

In case an opossum is sick, then it is likely that it will spread its sickness to a place where it is released. Often at times, if an opossum is sick and is relocated to a new place, it will die due to a lack of energy to explore the area for food. This is because relocation brings a lot of stress to an opossum since they happen to be territorial animals.

In case you feel like an opossum is sick when you catch it, it would be a humane practice to get it checked by your nearest animal rehabilitation center before releasing it to a new place.

Hence, trapping and releasing an opossum to a new place is way too much effort considering the fact that it does not solve the problem. Instead, you may want to find out the loophole through which opossums are managing to enter your property. For instance, if it is a hole in your fence, get it fixed. This would be a better solution to the overall problem.
